Year 2 - Summer 2
We hope you had a wonderful Spring Bank holiday. You were superstars last half term and we were so proud of all you achieved. We were so impressed with your recall of knowledge on George Stephenson and non-fiction writing. You produced fantastic non-chronological reports on nocturnal animals too. You showed a super understanding of statistics and the properties of shapes.
Our topics for this half term are Journey of Food and an introduction to the Victorians. We will link in our previous knowledge of continents to explore where different food comes from, on both a local and global basis. We will also be developing our knowledge of Victorians, exploring Victorian architecture and Transport. In English, we will be looking at writing to entertain through narrative. We will be revisiting descriptive writing as we prepare to write our own narratives. We will be exploring a well-known book by Roald Dahl, one that focuses on a very tasty, sweet treat. I wonder if you can guess which story we will be reading. We will also have opportunities this half term to write some recounts. This half term we will be continuing to look at more complex spellings and spelling rules. We will apply these skills, alongside our phonic knowledge, in our reading and writing. In maths, we will be focusing on fractions and time as well as recapping learning from previously taught areas.

Welcome to Summer 1!
We hope you had a wonderful Easter holiday. We want to say a big thank you for all your hard work with home learning last term. We were yet again blown away by all your efforts despite these challenging times. We were so impressed with your letter and instruction writing. You showed a super understanding of multiplication and your science topic of Everyday Materials. You did a fantastic job of making boats and testing them to see if they floated.
The topic for this half term is Changes within living memory. We will be exploring different modes of transport which will build on our previous learning of flight travel. We will also be developing our knowledge of Significant Individuals and will look at the impact they made in history. In English, we will be looking at writing to entertain, through poems and narratives. We will be exploring the features of these two genres and developing the skills to write our own poems and narratives. I wonder if you have seen any poems or have a favourite poem already. This half term we will be continuing to look at more complex spellings and spelling rules. We will apply these skills, alongside our phonic knowledge, in our reading and writing. In maths, we will be focusing on division to follow on from our multiplication unit of work, as well as looking at different units of measurement.

The topic for this half term is Everyday Materials. We will be exploring the uses of different everyday materials such as metal and wood. We will be developing our knowledge of the properties of everyday materials and thinking about their suitability for different uses. I wonder if you can recall any properties of materials already. In English, we will be looking at writing to inform, through letters and instructions. We will be exploring the features of these two genres and developing the skills to write our own letters and instructions. I wonder if you have seen any or written either of these two genres before. This half term we will be continuing to look at more complex spellings and spelling rules. We will apply these skills, alongside our phonic knowledge, in our reading and writing. We hope you enjoyed a well-deserved break over the holidays. What a busy, yet fantastic Autumn term we had! We are so proud of everything you achieved in your first full term. You blew us away with your enthusiasm and willingness to learn, especially whilst putting our nativity together. Your knowledge of the Wright Brothers was very impressive, and we were so impressed with all the facts you recalled on Queen Victoria.
The topic for this half term is Our Wonderful World. We will be recapping our knowledge of the UK and comparing this to other countries in the world. We will be developing our knowledge of the world by exploring the world’s seven continents and five oceans. I wonder if you can recall any of the world’s continents and/or oceans already. In English, we will be looking at stories from different cultures, with a focus on myths and legends. We will be exploring dragons and building up our drama skills to support our narrative writing. I wonder if you have heard tales of dragons before. This half term we will be moving on to look at more complex spellings and spelling rules. We will apply these skills, alongside our phonic knowledge, in our reading and writing. In maths, we will be continuing with addition and subtraction.

Year 2 - Autumn 2
We are so proud of how you settled into Year 2 and tackled all the new learning and challenges in the first half term. We hope you had as much fun last half term as we did teaching you. We were so impressed by all your knowledge on animals and habitats. You definitely taught us some new things. Your knowledge of traditional tales was super and you did a great job of writing your own alternative tales.
The topic for this half term is Events Beyond Living Memory. We will look at the history of flight, comparing flights through time. We will also explore the first aeroplane flight and the importance of the Wright Brothers in the history of flight. I wonder if you know anything about these significant figures already. In English, we will be looking at non-fiction texts, in particular non-chronological reports. We will be exploring the features of non-chronological reports and will be building up to write our own. I wonder if you know some of the features already. This half term we will be putting a lot of emphasis on phonics, recognising sounds and decoding words. We will continue to apply these skills in our reading and writing. Following on from our place value topic in maths, we will be focusing on addition and subtraction this term.

Welcome to Year 2 - Autumn 1
We hope you had the best summer filled with lots of fun. We are so excited to have you back in school and cannot wait for all the fun learning we are going to be doing together. We know it’s been a while since some of you were sat in a classroom but we want you to know everything is going to be okay and we are going to make you feel as comfortable as possible. It’s okay to feel a little nervous, even as adults we can feel the same too. If you have any worries, please don’t hesitate to come and speak to us.
The topic for this half term is Habitats. We will look at a range of animals and explore the habitats in which they live. We will also explore what animals, plants and humans need to survive. I wonder if you know anything about this topic already. In English, we will be exploring different traditional tales and will even be looking at some traditional tales with a twist. I wonder what traditional tales you know of already and if you have a favourite? We will continue with our phonics sounds and will continue to apply these in our reading and writing. In Maths, we will start the term by developing our understanding of place value and number knowledge.
