Our Curriculum

Spring 2

In Spring 2 our class topic will be The Blue Planet.

As part of this topic we will be visiting The Deep. During our visit we will be attending an educational workshop to really kick start our topic with a bang!

We will be learning about the ocean as a habitat and what kinds of animals live there. We will focus on how animals adapt to their habitat and the scientific vocabulary used to describe this.  We will also be learning about how people can affect the ocean, for better or worse. From a geographical perspective, we will be learning the names of the major oceans. We will also be using our atlas skills to locate and label them.

As part of our Blue Planet topic, we will be looking at lots of books about the ocean such as Dear Greenpeace and Zoo.  We will be writing non-chronological reports about the ocean habitat as well as letters and stories.

In Art, we will be designing and choosing materials to make a shoebox ocean habitat. Please could we have spare shoeboxes from home? We also need any empty 4 pint milk cartons for a secret art project, and any blue or green milk carton lids that you can donate.

Thank you
Mrs Mathieson

Spring 1

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

During our first week back, we will be looking at Russia as part of One World Week. We will be focusing on traditional Russian folktales and art. Hopefully we will learn a few Russian phrases too not to mention some Russian dance moves!

Following on from One World Week, our topic question for this half term will be “Was the Big Bad Wolf really that bad?”

We will be looking at the story of the Three Little Pigs from many angles. We will be focusing on retelling the story from the viewpoint of the Wolf. We will also be looking at different versions of the story and some exciting books that turn the story on its head!

The Three Little Pigs will also be a focus in our Science topic of Materials. We will be exploring materials and their properties with a view to designing some waterproof coats for the pigs. We will also be using our scientific findings to design sculptures using different materials in Art.

Of course we could not look at the Big Bad Wolf without asking him the time so we will be revisiting time in Maths. We will then move on to fractions and shape.

A change this half term is that PE will now be on Thursday am and Friday pm. Please ensure that all clothing is labelled with your child’s name.

Thank you for your continued support with reading. Please continue to remind your children to change their book upon arrival at school in the morning.
