Miss Haigh teaches year 2 and is supported in class by Mr Taylor.

 

Our Curriculum

Summer Term 2

English

This half term our focus is writing instructions. We are going to be looking at different types of instructions and writing our own set of instructions for making a smoothie. Yum! We will also be looking at the story of Icarus and Daedalus.

Maths

This half term we will be revisiting fractions of shapes and amounts and looking at equivalent fractions. We will also be revisiting subtraction and addition missing number calculations and looking at inverse operations.

Topic

This half terms theme if flight. Our focused historical figure is Amy Johnson. We will also be looking at other types of transport and when planes were first invented. In Science this half term we will be learning about materials.

PE

Our PE days this half term are Thursday and Friday. Please ensure correct PE kit is in school at all times. If weather is nice our PE session will be outside therefore it is important the children have correct footwear.

Homework

On Friday your child will receive either Maths or English homework. Please ensure this is completed and bought back to school the following Wednesday.

Spring Term 2

 

English

We are currently looking at the genre letters in English. We will be reading the letters that are included in the stories The Jolly Postman and Greenpeace. I will be looking at the detail of the children's writing and checking they are including different conjunctions, question sentences and using interesting vocabulary. The children will also be looking at a variety of classic poems in English and in Guided Reading lessons. They will write their own poems, which will include a range of suffixes.

Towards the end of the half term we will revisit non-chronological reports and write a report about whales.

In phonics we will continue looking at alternative graphemes and learn about homophones.

Maths

In Maths we will be revisiting 2D and 3D shapes. The children will be identifying properties of the shapes. We will also be revisiting time, fractions and money.

Topic

This terms Topic is a history focus. The children we learn how to put events from the past into chronological order. We will be learning about Queen Victoria and looking at what life was like for children in the Victorian era. We will also be learning about Florence Nightingale and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The children will be making their own bridges using junk material.

PE

Our PE days this half term are Wednesday and Friday this half term. Please ensure correct PE kit is in school at all times.

Homework

On Friday your child will receive either Maths or English homework. Please ensure this is completed and bought back to school the following Wednesday.

Spring Term 1

English

 We are currently learning about narrative stories using traditional tales.  This includes speaking and listening and Talk for Writing - which is very exciting!  Ask your child to retell the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  We are building our understanding of grammar through our work in English and the children are using expanded noun phrases and conjunctions in their writing.  They are using Exclamation sentences and developing their use of commas. We are developing our understanding of description by writing character and setting descriptions.  Through our topic we revisit earlier genres of writing including non-chronological reports, recounts and letters.

 

Science

In Science this half-term we will be learning about Living Things and their Habitats. The children will be investigating different types of habitats and which animals and insects may live there. We are going to visit the pond in East Bierley Village to look for habitats and also in the surrounding local area. The children will also learn about the seven life processes and how they help us to stay alive.

Maths

In Maths this half-term we will be revisiting addition and subtraction. We will be looking at the partitioning method and how that can support us when working out calculations. The children will also be learning how to workout  fraction of amounts and how to recognise fractions of shaded areas. We will also be using money to find different amounts and identifying the value of different coins. To provide support at home you could practise adding different amounts together, practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s forward and backwards.

PE

This half-term PE is on Tuesdays with Mr Myers and Thursdays with Miss Haigh. Please ensure that your child's P.E kit is in school on the correct days and that hair is tied up.
